DEFEAT

During the Civil War, Barcelona suffered under the cruel bombardments by the Italian air force, who were allies of the forces that had rebelled against the Republic. Overall, the planes supporting Franco caused 2,500 deaths and destroyed 1,500 buildings. On 26 January 1939, Franco’s troops occupied Barcelona and the Civil War was over for its citizens. On 1 April 1939, the Civil War came to end with the occupation of Madrid. The dictatorship led by General Franco began, a political regime characterised by its fascist ideology and the political, social and cultural repression of citizens. Because of the military defeat, political and trade union leaders of the Republic and many writers, intellectuals, teachers, workers, experts, professionals, etc. all had to leave Catalonia in early February 1939 and make their way into exile.
