In this monographic issue, Clío reflects on the change in regime that occurred in April 1931: the king abandoned the country to prevent confrontation and the crowds loudly celebrated the proclamation of the Republic. Was this an exemplary transition or effectively a coup d’état in another guise? A new version of the events of 14 April is presented, as are the hidden manoeuvrings around this landmark date in history.

“Seventy-five years ago, Spain revealed the smile of the Second Republic. However, that smile froze when fascist officers and troops rebelled five years later. Today, it might seem strange that, after so many years, an anniversary as distant as this should give rise to so much emotion.” With this emotional opening, El Viejo Topo presented a “República” special, with a range of material on the First and the Second Republic, as well as efforts made to perpetuate our memories of this era.

The role played by King Alfonso XIII during the difficult years of the 1920s led to accusations from the political forces and the people that he had created a power vacuum during the crisis at the end of his reign. In his article, Jorge M. Reverte describes the days leading up to the proclamation of the Republic.

The expression “moderate modernity”, coined by Tomàs Llorens, is a useful notion when it comes to defining the various forces for renewal and reform that characterised the cultural movement in Catalonia in the inter-war years. The magazine L’Avenç published a special report on the Second Republic to coincide with its 75th anniversary.

This monographic issue of Leer magazine focussed on the 70th anniversary of the deaths of Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated in Granada, and the playwright Pedro Muñoz Seca, who was shot in Paracuellos del Jarama the same year that Lorca died. These two men, killed by the opposing sides in the Civil War, are an expression of the rejection of the barbarism that swept through Spain and which brought with it death, imprisonment and exile for thousands of intellectuals.

The books magazine Qué Leer published this special issue that looks at the latest publications on the ‘two Spains’. The titles they consider shatter stereotypes and offer a more nuanced view of the conflict.

During the Republican era, Catalonia had a system of schools that was a pioneer within Europe. This special report looks at the teachers who worked during the time of the Republic, with testimony provided by some of the key figures of the day. This monographic issue of Sàpiens analyses the background, from the close of the 19th century, and follows the education system through to its destruction following Franco’s victory, providing insights into the important educational work done by thousands of Republican teachers.
