1. ASSOCIATIONS
The main purpose of the Asociación de Amigos de las Brigadas Internacionales (AABI, Friends of the International Brigades Association) is to gather together the historical legacy of the International Brigades. The association’s Web site includes a selection of documents, maps and a photo gallery. You can also take a tour of their virtual exhibition. In addition, the site provides links and information on the activities organised within the framework of the association.
The Web site of this association of friends and relatives of those who suffered reprisals from the Franco regime due to their involvement in the Second Republic carries articles, news and other resources, as well as an extensive selection of links to foundations, associations and portals related to the Second Republic.
This association seeks to perpetuate the remembrance of history in Catalonia and was awarded the St. George’s Cross by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Its Web site carries news, reports and documents. Notable among its various sections is the area given over to the ‘disappeared’, the purpose of which is to make visitors to the site aware of the Catalan disappeared and to remember them and so contribute towards discovering their whereabouts. Lastly, the site offers an extensive selection of links to the various local associations working to ensure that historical memory is revived.
The Associació Catalana d'Expresos Polítics (Catalan Association of Former Political Prisoners) works to defend historical memory and to make society as a whole aware of the issue. The association’s members are some of the hundreds of thousands of people who suffered reprisals at the hands of the Franco regime.
The Ciutadans per la República (Citizens for the Republic) association works to raise citizens’ awareness and thereby encourage broad sectors of society to participate in reviving and spreading democracy, in perpetuating our memories of the past and in defending the Republic. The association is a secular, democratic and federal organisation for the people, the sole possible framework for developing democracy and individual, collective and social public rights.
The Coordinadora per a la Memòria Històrica i Democràtica de Catalunya (The Committee for the Historical and Democratic Memory of Catalonia) is a democratic, not-for-profit umbrella group for bodies and collectives who have come together of their own volition and who are engaged, either fully or in part, in recovering, perpetuating and disseminating memories of the past and democracy.
The aim of the Foro por la Memoria (Forum for Memory) is to present moral, historical, archaeological and legal evidence of the atrocities committed by Franco’s army and his allies. The forum’s Web site provides information on the progress of excavations and the state of graves.
Les Dones del 36 (The Women of 36) is an association of women who fought in the Civil War and who continued to fight for freedom during the Franco dictatorship. One of the association’s aims is to convey the role of women to the younger generations through talks and gatherings at schools, universities and cultural centres. Les Dones de 36 was awarded the Barcelona City Council Prize of Honour and the 8 March-Maria Aurèlia Capmany Prize. |
