“A really good-looking brazen woman whose effigy, as painted by poster and caricature artists, continually had me disturbed in a sinful manner. She wore a Phrygian cap, which symbolised freedom and looked like a Catalan cap, and had bounteous breasts crossed by a tricolour flag—red, yellow and purple—and a long dress that was open up one side, revealing a lovely bit of leg.”
