Proclamation of the Republic at the Town Hall

At one o’clock in the afternoon, Mr. Companys and a number of other councillors entered the mayor’s office. Mr. Companys asked the acting mayor, Mr. Martínez Domingo, to give him the staff of office. Mr. Mártinez stated that he could only hand it over to a constituted authority or one about to be constituted, but that if this were a situation involving force, then he [Mr. Companys] should take it. Seeing that it was useless to put up any resistance, Mr. Martínez Domingo gave him the staff and left the Town Hall.
