Mr. Macià at the Generalitat
When Mr. Macià left the Town Hall, he was accompanied by Mr. Gassol, Mr. Aiguadé and Mr. Casanovas to the Generalitat and had to clear a narrow pathway for himself through the crowd. Once at the Generalitat, Mr. Macià came out onto the balcony with Mr. Gassol. When silence had fallen, Mr. Macià said:
“I have taken possession of the Government of Catalonia on behalf of the people. Today the people have given us their vote for us to govern the city, and I, on behalf of Catalonia, have taken over its government and I tell you that we are prepared to defend its freedoms. I hope that the people will be capable of doing the same. They will not be able to remove us from here while we are living and breathing. I also say to you that we have to make ourselves worthy of this freedom.”
