POLITICS HITS THE STREETS

The first municipal elections after the military dictatorship were held on 12 April 1931 and became a referendum against the monarchy. Alfonso XIII went into exile and the Second Spanish Republic was spontaneously proclaimed on the streets. The peaceful revolution that spring turned the subjects of a kingdom into the citizens of a free country.
